Gos (Galactooligosaccharides) for Nutrient Absorption

Preliminary evidence 11 studies

Research suggests that GOS may support nutrient absorption through multiple mechanisms, including direct effects on intestinal cell gene expression related to nutrient transport and fat metabolism, shifts in gut bacterial populations that favor mineral uptake, and reductions in gut inflammation that protect digestive enzyme activity and intestinal barrier function. The available evidence comes primarily from animal studies — including fish, piglets, calves, and rats — along with a small number of infant trials and cell-based laboratory work, meaning findings cannot be straightforwardly generalized to broader human populations. Studies in infants show mixed results: one three-week trial in Kenyan infants found that GOS supplementation was associated with a 62% increase in iron absorption from a fortified food, while a separate single-dose study in a similar population found no meaningful benefit, suggesting that any effect on iron bioavailability may depend on duration of use rather than a one-time addition. Reviews further indicate that GOS and related prebiotic fibers may enhance calcium and magnesium absorption partly by promoting beneficial gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria, though the overall evidence base for human nutrient absorption remains limited by small sample sizes, varying study designs, and the heavy reliance on non-human models.
