Glutathione for Immune Function

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that glutathione plays a meaningful role in immune function, with several studies indicating that raising glutathione levels — through direct supplementation or related compounds — can enhance natural killer cell activity and broader immune responses, particularly in individuals whose levels are already depleted. The most relevant evidence comes from a six-month randomized controlled trial in healthy adults showing dose-dependent increases in glutathione across multiple body compartments alongside more than a twofold increase in natural killer cell activity, as well as a small pilot study of liposomal glutathione reporting similar immune improvements, though that study's sample size of twelve participants limits how much weight can be placed on its findings. A notable mixed finding from a 2000 review cautions that healthy individuals with already-optimal glutathione levels are unlikely to benefit from supplementation, and that the clearest immune benefits observed in controlled trials have been in populations with significant glutathione depletion, such as those with HIV infection. Additional mechanistic research points to glutathione's broader role in regulating oxidative stress within immune cells and supporting antioxidant defense systems, though much of this work comes from reviews, animal studies, and cell-based research that cannot directly confirm the same effects in healthy human populations.
