Glucosamine for Joint Health

Moderate evidence 29 studies

Research suggests that glucosamine may offer modest benefits for joint health, particularly by reducing cartilage breakdown markers in athletes engaged in high-impact sports, though the overall body of evidence remains mixed and inconclusive. Studies include a 2019 review finding that glucosamine reduced urinary markers of cartilage degradation in soccer and rugby players, a 2010 review noting a persistent disconnect between promising laboratory findings and inconsistent results in human clinical trials, and a 2018 review indicating that other natural compounds such as curcumin and Boswellia showed larger effect sizes than glucosamine for pain and disability reduction in osteoarthritis. An observational 2024 study also reported an association between habitual glucosamine use and reduced risk of liver complications in people with diabetes-related liver disease, though this type of study cannot establish direct causation. Notably, a 2020 cell and animal study raised a potential concern by finding that glucosamine enhanced the replication of hepatitis B virus and other viruses through disruption of normal cellular cleanup processes, a finding that warrants further investigation particularly for individuals with chronic viral infections, and a 2012 review flagged reports of liver injury in users of multi-ingredient joint supplements containing glucosamine, though the responsible ingredient could not be identified.
