Studies also point toward a possible mechanism involving changes in gut microbial composition and increased short-chain fatty acid production, suggesting the fiber may support digestive regularity partly by promoting a healthier colonic environment. That said, findings are not entirely uniform — one randomized controlled trial in children found no significant benefit over placebo and noted some increase in abdominal discomfort, and a 2017 pediatric meta-analysis, while modestly positive on frequency, found no significant effect on stool consistency or overall treatment success — indicating that the evidence is more consistent in adults than in children, and that factors such as dose, age, and underlying condition may influence outcomes.
