Gaba (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) for Anxiety Relief

Moderate evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that GABA plays a well-established role in the brain's natural stress-dampening and anxiety-regulating systems, with several reviews linking disruptions in GABAergic signaling to conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder, epilepsy, and related psychiatric conditions. However, the evidence for oral GABA supplementation directly reducing anxiety or stress in humans is considerably less certain — a 2020 systematic review of 14 placebo-controlled trials found only limited support for stress reduction and even weaker evidence for other benefits, concluding that more rigorous research is needed. The most directly supportive human trial, a small 2024 randomized controlled trial of 30 women, reported improvements in mood and autonomic nervous system measures when GABA supplementation was combined with exercise, though its limited sample size tempers the strength of those findings. Taken together, the available evidence base consists largely of reviews, mechanistic research, and a small number of human trials, and while the underlying science is biologically plausible, studies do not yet provide sufficient grounds for firm conclusions about the effectiveness of supplemental GABA for anxiety relief in the general population.
