Flaxseed (Food) for Blood Sugar Regulation

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that flaxseed and its oil may support blood sugar regulation through several biological pathways, with animal studies indicating benefits such as reduced fasting glucose, restored liver glycogen, dampened inflammation, and improved gut microbiome composition in diabetic models. A 2025 review of human-focused literature concluded that flaxseed's omega-3 fatty acids, lignans, and dietary fiber show promise for reducing fasting blood glucose and easing inflammatory markers in people with diabetes, framing it as a potential complement to conventional treatment rather than a standalone therapy. Studies indicate, however, that findings are not uniformly positive — one mouse study found that flaxseed oil raised fasting blood sugar when paired with a calorie-restricted high-fat diet, and a study comparing plant-based fibers suggested flaxseed fiber has a less distinctive functional profile than some alternatives like konjac or apple pectin for enzyme inhibition related to blood sugar control. The available evidence rests heavily on animal studies and narrative reviews rather than large-scale randomized controlled trials in humans, which limits how confidently these findings can be applied to human health outcomes.
