Dong Quai for Anemia

Preliminary evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that Angelica sinensis, particularly its polysaccharide fraction (ASP), may support blood health through several complementary mechanisms, including reducing hepcidin levels to improve iron availability, suppressing inflammatory signaling pathways that interfere with red blood cell production, and stimulating erythropoietin in the context of kidney-related anemia. Studies indicate that in animal models, ASP has reversed markers of anemia of chronic disease, iron deficiency anemia, and chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression, while large retrospective database studies from Taiwan found that Angelica sinensis is among the most commonly prescribed herbs for anemia in clinical practice and was associated with improved survival in aplastic anemia patients using traditional Chinese herbal medicine alongside conventional care. However, the available evidence consists almost entirely of animal studies, cell culture experiments, database analyses, and observational studies rather than randomized controlled trials in humans, meaning that causal conclusions about efficacy and safety in people cannot yet be drawn. The existing research is broadly directionally supportive but preliminary, and authors across multiple studies consistently call for standardized clinical trials before these findings can be considered actionable for medical use.
