Dandelion for Antioxidant Support

Research suggests that dandelion contains a range of bioactive compounds — including flavonoids such as luteolin and quercetin derivatives, the triterpenoid taraxasterol, and various phenolic compounds — that demonstrate antioxidant activity in laboratory and animal studies, with findings consistently pointing toward meaningful free radical scavenging and oxidative stress reduction. Studies indicate that this antioxidant potential can be influenced by factors such as fermentation processing, plant-growth regulators, and even light exposure during cultivation, all of which have been shown to modify the concentration and profile of dandelion's antioxidant compounds. The available evidence comes primarily from in vitro experiments, computational modeling, and preclinical animal models, with one 2012 narrative review summarizing the broader literature and two 2022–2023 reviews examining specific compounds, meaning that well-controlled human clinical trials are largely absent from this body of research. A notable complication is that one study observed a paradoxical prooxidant effect at low concentrations of dandelion flower extract in the presence of copper ions, a reminder that antioxidant behavior in biological systems can be more complex than laboratory test results alone suggest.
