D-Mannose for Urinary Tract Health

Preliminary evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that D-mannose may support urinary tract health primarily by blocking the adhesion of uropathogenic E. coli to the bladder wall through interference with a bacterial surface protein called FimH, a mechanism demonstrated in both a 2023 review of the broader scientific literature and a 2025 laboratory bladder tissue model that tested D-mannose alongside antibiotics and bacteriophages under conditions designed to mimic real urinary tract physiology. A separate 2025 organoid study also found that D-mannose, combined with nicotinamide, reduced oxidative stress and DNA damage in aged bladder tissue models, hinting at possible broader roles in bladder cell health beyond infection prevention, though this work was conducted entirely in laboratory settings and cannot yet be extended to conclusions about human outcomes. The available evidence consists largely of in vitro and laboratory model studies rather than large randomized controlled trials, which means the findings, while mechanistically plausible and directionally supportive, should be interpreted cautiously, as bench results do not always translate into clinical benefit. Several studies included in the source set address topics such as gut bacteria, pediatric cancer, and COVID-19 that have no direct relevance to D-mannose or urinary tract health, and readers should be aware that the overall body of evidence specifically supporting D-mannose for UTI prevention in humans remains limited in scope and scale.
