Research suggests that creatine supplementation may support muscle strength and growth, particularly when combined with resistance training, with one randomized controlled trial finding that creatine enhanced the muscle-building response to exercise in young men partly by reducing myostatin, a protein that limits muscle growth, beyond what training alone achieved. A 2020 review also identified creatine as a promising strategy for counteracting age-related muscle loss in older adults, though the authors noted that more research is needed to determine optimal approaches for this population. The available evidence is limited in scope — the directly relevant studies are few, and much of the surrounding literature addresses muscle physiology in clinical or disease contexts rather than healthy populations seeking performance gains — so broad conclusions should be drawn cautiously.
