Copper for Bone Health

Moderate evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that copper plays a meaningful supporting role in bone health, with evidence pointing to its involvement in collagen cross-linking and bone mineral formation as plausible biological mechanisms. A 2025 meta-analysis pooling data from over 14,000 participants found that higher dietary copper intake was associated with modestly better lumbar spine bone mineral density, and a separate observational study in women linked low copper intake to lower bone density across multiple skeletal sites, while reviews from 2001 and 2013 consistently identified copper as one of several trace elements important for skeletal development across the lifespan. However, the evidence is not uniformly positive — a cross-sectional study of U.S. adults found that both very low and very high serum copper levels were associated with worse bone outcomes, with elevated copper linked to roughly four times the odds of prior fracture, particularly in men, suggesting that balance may matter as much as sufficiency. Taken together, the available literature — which consists largely of observational studies, cross-sectional analyses, and narrative reviews rather than controlled trials — supports a modest and likely non-linear relationship between copper and bone health, with conclusions limited by the inability of these study designs to establish cause and effect.
