Collagen for Skin Health

Strong evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that oral hydrolyzed collagen supplementation is associated with improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and structural markers of skin aging, with support coming from a 2023 meta-analysis pooling 26 randomized controlled trials, a 2020 systematic review, and individual placebo-controlled trials that reported consistent beneficial effects across these outcomes. Studies indicate that proposed mechanisms include stimulation of fibroblasts, which are the skin's collagen-producing cells, as well as increased production of glycosaminoglycans important for skin structure and hydration. However, the overall evidence base carries meaningful limitations: several reviews note that many studies are small, industry-affiliated, or insufficiently designed, and at least one multi-ingredient trial cannot attribute its findings to collagen alone since the supplement also contained vitamin C, zinc, biotin, and other active compounds. A more critical 2020 review found the clinical evidence limited and the mechanisms not yet fully understood, underscoring that while the direction of findings is generally favorable, the strength of the evidence does not yet firmly establish collagen supplementation as a proven intervention for skin health.
