Collagen Peptides (Food) for Skin Health

Strong evidence 28 studies

Research suggests that collagen peptides may support several measurable markers of skin health, including hydration, elasticity, wrinkle appearance, and dermal density, with the most consistent evidence coming from multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials that reported statistically significant improvements compared to placebo groups over periods ranging from 8 to 12 weeks. Studies indicate that some of these effects persisted for a short period after supplementation ended, though it remains unclear how long any benefits last beyond the study windows. Several important limitations apply across this body of evidence: some trials tested collagen peptides alongside other active ingredients such as vitamins and minerals, making it difficult to attribute effects to collagen alone, most studies enrolled relatively small numbers of participants, predominantly women, and the research includes animal and cell-based studies whose findings have not yet been confirmed in human clinical trials. A 2019 review also highlights that collagen peptides derived from food by-products show broader bioactive potential, including antioxidant properties relevant to skin aging, though translating laboratory findings into reliable, standardized functional food applications remains an ongoing challenge.
