Coffee for Weight Management

Strong evidence 22 studies

Research suggests that coffee and its bioactive compounds, particularly chlorogenic acids found in green coffee bean extract, may modestly support weight management, with evidence coming from a 12-week clinical trial reporting reductions in body weight and BMI, a large prospective cohort study finding that increased unsweetened coffee consumption was associated with less weight gain over time, and several reviews noting that coffee-derived compounds may promote fat burning and improve metabolic markers in overweight individuals. Studies indicate that the effects appear to extend beyond caffeine alone, as decaffeinated coffee showed similar associations in both the cohort study and a meta-analysis on glucose metabolism, pointing to plant compounds like chlorogenic acids as likely contributors. However, the overall body of evidence has important limitations: the clinical trial lacked a placebo control group, the prospective findings reflect association rather than causation, and narrative reviews have consistently described the broader evidence on functional foods and weight management as inconsistent and inconclusive. Adding sugar to coffee appeared to attenuate any weight-related benefit in the cohort data, and researchers across multiple studies emphasized that coffee or its extracts should be considered alongside, not in place of, established approaches to weight and metabolic health management.
