Coconut Oil for Cognitive Function

Preliminary evidence 9 studies

Research suggests that coconut oil and its constituent medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) may support cognitive function, particularly in the context of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, with a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of seven studies reporting statistically significant improvements in cognitive scores associated with coconut oil consumption, and a 2025 systematic review of 13 randomized controlled trials finding generally positive but inconsistent results for exogenous ketones including MCTs. The proposed mechanism centers on MCTs' ability to generate ketones that the brain can use as an alternative fuel source when glucose metabolism is impaired, and a rat study found that virgin coconut oil improved memory alongside favorable changes in neurotransmitter activity and oxidative stress markers. However, the picture is complicated by animal studies showing that coconut oil consumed as part of high-fat, high-fructose diets was associated with impaired spatial memory and metabolic disruption in rats, and that most high-fat diets promoted brain inflammation in obese mice, suggesting that dietary context matters considerably. Overall, the evidence base remains limited by small sample sizes, substantial variation in study designs, and a heavy reliance on animal models, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about coconut oil's effects on human cognition.
