Coconut Oil for Antimicrobial Properties

Moderate evidence 10 studies

Research suggests that coconut oil possesses antimicrobial and antifungal properties, with laboratory and clinical evidence pointing most consistently toward activity against Candida species and certain oral bacteria. Supporting this, an in vitro study found all tested Candida strains susceptible to virgin coconut oil, and a small randomized controlled trial in older adults found a coconut oil mouthwash reduced oral fungal counts comparably to chlorhexidine over 14 days, though chlorhexidine remained more effective against bacteria overall. Animal research also indicates that medium-chain fatty acids derived from coconut oil may help reduce intestinal colonization by pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli, and a large clinical trial is currently underway to test whether topical coconut oil application can reduce serious infections in extremely preterm infants, though results are not yet available. The body of evidence is still largely preliminary, drawing from laboratory studies, small clinical trials, and multi-ingredient formulations where coconut oil's individual contribution is difficult to isolate, meaning the overall picture is promising but not yet definitive enough to draw firm conclusions about its effectiveness as a standalone antimicrobial agent in humans.
