Cardamom for Dental And Oral Health

Preliminary evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that cardamom and its essential oil components may have meaningful antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties relevant to oral health, with multiple laboratory studies demonstrating activity against key bacteria associated with dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral infections. Studies indicate that cardamom extracts and essential oils can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, a primary contributor to tooth decay, as well as periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, potentially through mechanisms involving disruption of bacterial cell membranes and reduction of inflammatory signaling via the NF-κB pathway. The body of evidence includes in vitro laboratory studies, formulation research involving mouthwashes, nanoparticle candies, and nanoemulsions, and at least one study examining orthodontic material applications, all trending in a supportive direction. However, it is important to note that the available studies are predominantly preclinical and laboratory-based rather than clinical trials in human patients, so it remains unclear how well these findings translate to real-world oral health outcomes, and further rigorous human studies would be needed to draw firmer conclusions.
