Calcium for Pms Relief

Preliminary evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that calcium supplementation is among the better-supported natural options for reducing premenstrual syndrome symptoms, with a 2009 systematic review of randomized controlled trials identifying it as having the strongest evidence among natural products evaluated for PMS relief, and a 2002 clinical review recommending calcium carbonate as a first-line option for mild-to-moderate PMS. Several additional reviews from 2003 and 2023 similarly identify calcium as one of a handful of micronutrients showing meaningful promise for PMS management, alongside magnesium, vitamin D, and B vitamins. One 2025 randomized controlled trial found benefit from a multi-ingredient supplement containing calcium citrate among other components, though its findings cannot be attributed to calcium alone. Taken together, the available evidence is generally supportive but carries notable limitations — most reviews acknowledge that study designs vary considerably, the overall body of research remains methodologically inconsistent, and no review concludes the evidence is strong enough to formally recommend calcium as a proven treatment.
