Calcium for Nerve Function

Research suggests that calcium plays a multifaceted role in nerve function, with the most consistent evidence coming from studies on nimodipine, a calcium channel blocker, which a 2019 meta-analysis and a 2018 review found to be associated with significantly improved recovery of facial and vocal cord nerve function after injury, as well as potential benefits for hearing preservation during certain surgeries. Studies indicate that calcium signaling is deeply intertwined with nerve health more broadly, including evidence from a 2020 rat study showing that calcium-handling proteins in muscle change measurably after sciatic nerve injury, and a 2025 Alzheimer's mouse model study finding that disruptions in calcium regulation in peripheral nerves appear early in disease progression. However, the evidence base is largely composed of small studies, animal models, reviews, and a limited number of meta-analyses rather than large randomized controlled trials, and several studies included here address calcium only indirectly — for instance, through its interactions with magnesium in auditory nerve health or through hormonal regulation of calcium balance in the kidney — making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about calcium supplementation or direct calcium interventions for nerve function specifically. Overall, the research points to calcium signaling as fundamentally important to neuronal health and recovery, while also reflecting that the field is still working to untangle calcium's precise roles from those of related minerals, hormones, and cellular mechanisms.
