Calcium for Dental And Oral Health

Preliminary evidence 14 studies

Research suggests that calcium plays a meaningful role in dental and oral health, primarily through its contribution to tooth enamel integrity and remineralization. A 2024 scoping review of 38 studies found that calcium-rich dairy products appear to support enamel remineralization, exhibit antibacterial properties against cavity-causing bacteria, and help promote a balanced oral microbiome in children and adolescents, though the authors noted that long-term, high-quality research is still needed to confirm these effects. A 2025 review further suggests that calcium-binding proteins — specifically calbindin-D28K — may serve as a biomarker linking calcium regulation to periodontal disease and tooth decay risk, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, though the authors acknowledge that direct studies on this relationship remain scarce. The available evidence is largely drawn from reviews and observational research rather than randomized controlled trials, and several of the studies provided in this collection bear no meaningful relevance to calcium's role in oral health, so conclusions should be regarded as preliminary and the overall evidence base as still developing.
