Colostrum (Bovine) for Gut Health

Research suggests that bovine colostrum may support gut health through multiple mechanisms, including improving intestinal structure, reducing gut permeability, modulating the gut microbiome, and bolstering local immune defenses such as secretory IgA — findings that emerge from a collection of animal studies, preterm infant models, a small randomized controlled trial in very preterm infants, and several reviews. Studies indicate particular promise in reducing the incidence and severity of conditions like necrotizing enterocolitis and diarrheal illness, especially in vulnerable newborn and preterm populations, with the timing of introduction appearing to matter, as early administration consistently showed stronger benefits than delayed use. A 2025 systematic review of eight pediatric studies found the overall evidence too inconsistent and methodologically varied to draw firm conclusions, and a small feasibility trial in children with Crohn's disease found no clear symptom benefit over placebo, reflecting the mixed picture that remains across different populations and health conditions. The body of evidence is still largely composed of animal models and preliminary human studies with small sample sizes and heterogeneous designs, meaning that while the biological rationale is well-supported and early findings are encouraging, larger and more standardized human clinical trials are needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
