Bifidobacterium Longum for Immune Function

Strong evidence 30 studies

Research suggests that Bifidobacterium longum may support immune function through several mechanisms, including modulating inflammatory signaling, strengthening the gut barrier, influencing immune cell populations, and producing metabolites that interact with immune-regulating receptors, with supporting evidence coming from animal studies, laboratory experiments, and at least one randomized controlled trial in elderly patients showing that B. longum BB536 helped preserve natural killer cell activity during a period that included influenza vaccination. Studies indicate that the bacterium's immune-related effects may be particularly relevant in vulnerable populations such as older adults and infants, where gut microbiota composition appears closely tied to immune tone and inflammatory markers like TNF-alpha and TGF-beta1. However, the evidence base has meaningful limitations: many supportive findings come from preclinical models or mechanistic studies rather than large human trials, one randomized controlled trial in athletes found no significant differences in measured immune markers despite some psychological recovery benefits, and the broader literature on related Bifidobacterium strains often involves mixed-species probiotic products, making it difficult to isolate the contribution of B. longum specifically. Overall, the research is promising but preliminary, and larger, well-controlled human trials are needed before firm conclusions about immune benefits can be drawn.
