Bifidobacterium Breve for Gut Health

Moderate evidence 26 studies

Research suggests that Bifidobacterium breve may support gut health across multiple life stages and contexts, with studies indicating benefits including improved microbial diversity, increased production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids, strengthened intestinal barrier integrity, and reduced gut inflammation. The supporting evidence includes two randomized controlled trials — one in adults with prediabetes showing improved microbiome composition alongside metabolic benefits, and one in infants showing reduced infections and healthier gut bacterial profiles — as well as several animal and preclinical studies demonstrating that B. breve may help repair antibiotic-related gut disruption, reduce intestinal permeability, and modulate immune responses in the gut. Observational and computational research additionally identifies B. breve as associated with healthy child development and suggests a potential role in fetal brain metabolism through maternal gut colonization, though these findings are preliminary and do not establish causation. It is worth noting that much of the evidence comes from animal models, small pilot trials, and studies where B. breve was combined with other probiotic strains or prebiotic fibers rather than tested in isolation, which limits how confidently findings can be applied to human gut health outcomes on their own.
