Bhringraj for Skin Health

Preliminary evidence 7 studies

Research suggests that Bhringraj (Eclipta alba / Eclipta prostrata) may offer a range of skin-related benefits, with published studies pointing to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and photoprotective properties attributed to bioactive compounds such as wedelolactone, ursolic acid, luteolin, and various flavonoids and triterpenoids. The available evidence consists primarily of laboratory and animal studies, narrative reviews, and applied formulation research — including work on sunscreen and wound dressing applications — with no large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically examining skin outcomes in humans. Studies indicate that several of the plant's isolated compounds show enough biological activity to be considered candidates for further drug development targeting skin diseases, and one study demonstrated a measurable SPF-boosting effect in a sunscreen formulation context. However, multiple reviewers consistently note that the mechanisms behind these effects are not yet well characterized, most findings have not been replicated in rigorous human clinical trials, and the overall evidence base, while directionally supportive, remains preliminary.
