Astaxanthin for Skin Health

Moderate evidence 19 studies

Research suggests that astaxanthin, a naturally occurring carotenoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, shows promising benefits for skin health, particularly in the areas of UV protection, moisture retention, wrinkle reduction, and skin texture improvement. The evidence base includes several narrative and systematic reviews, one systematic review of eleven clinical trials, and a 2024 randomized controlled trial, with the majority of sources leaning supportive, though one review characterized the overall picture as mixed. Studies indicate that while the direction of findings is generally positive, the clinical evidence is tempered by notable limitations: most trials involved small sample sizes, recruited predominantly healthy Japanese women, and were frequently funded by industry, raising questions about how broadly the results can be applied. A 2023 cell-based study also found that different structural forms of astaxanthin may have distinct and sometimes opposing effects on skin-related outcomes, and reviewers across multiple publications consistently note that optimal dosing, long-term safety, and precise mechanisms remain insufficiently established to support definitive recommendations.
