Astaxanthin for Cognitive Function

Preliminary evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that astaxanthin may support cognitive function and neuroprotection through multiple biological mechanisms, including reducing oxidative stress, dampening inflammation, and supporting synaptic plasticity, with a body of preclinical animal studies consistently reporting improvements in memory and learning across models of aging, diabetes, and vascular dementia. Studies indicate that the human evidence, while generally pointing in a positive direction, is more limited and mixed — a 2024 meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials found mostly small and non-significant effects on cognitive performance measures, a placebo-controlled trial in middle-aged adults found no overall cognitive benefit at a standard dose though a subgroup of younger participants showed some improvement in word recall, and a systematic review of trials in older adults found that reported cognitive gains rarely reached statistical significance. On the more supportive side, a randomized double-blind trial found statistically significant improvements in composite and verbal memory scores in adults with subjective memory complaints when astaxanthin was combined with tocotrienols, and several reviews conclude that the compound shows enough promise to warrant further investigation. Overall, the current evidence base is preliminary, relies heavily on animal models and small human trials, and is insufficient to draw firm conclusions about astaxanthin's effectiveness for cognitive health in humans.
