Ashwagandha for Testosterone Support

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that ashwagandha may support testosterone levels in men, with evidence coming from multiple sources including two randomized controlled trials, several narrative and systematic reviews, and preclinical animal studies — the majority of which point in a supportive direction. Studies indicate that men taking ashwagandha experienced statistically significant increases in free testosterone, DHEA-S, and luteinizing hormone compared to placebo groups, and broader reviews have identified ashwagandha as one of a small number of supplements with meaningful clinical backing for testosterone support alongside zinc and vitamin D. However, important limitations temper these findings: the human trials generally involved small samples, focused on specific populations such as overweight or fatigued middle-aged men, and in at least one case the hormonal increases did not translate into measurable improvements in how participants felt. Reviewers consistently note that any hormonal effects from ashwagandha are likely modest, that foundational lifestyle factors such as sleep, exercise, and diet should take priority, and that more rigorous large-scale trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
