Ashwagandha for Sleep Quality

Strong evidence 15 studies

Research suggests that ashwagandha supplementation is associated with improvements in several dimensions of sleep quality, including how quickly people fall asleep, total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and wakefulness after sleep onset, with benefits observed in both healthy adults and those with diagnosed insomnia. The evidence base includes two meta-analyses pooling data from multiple randomized controlled trials, more than half a dozen individual RCTs, and several controlled trials using other designs, and the direction of findings is consistently supportive across this body of work. Studies indicate that effects may be more pronounced in people with insomnia, with longer supplementation durations, and at higher doses, while one study using a milk-based delivery format found improvements on some sleep measures but not all, and another short-term trial in college students found sleep benefits without a corresponding reduction in perceived stress, suggesting that sleep and stress outcomes do not always move in tandem. Important limitations across the literature include generally small sample sizes, variability in the ashwagandha preparations and doses studied, high statistical heterogeneity noted in at least one meta-analysis, limited long-term safety data, and one animal study whose findings cannot be directly applied to humans, meaning that while the overall picture is promising, larger and more rigorous trials are still needed to draw firm conclusions.
