Artichoke Extract for Cholesterol Management

Strong evidence 12 studies

Research suggests that artichoke extract may offer modest benefits for cholesterol management, with multiple randomized controlled trials reporting reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as improvements in HDL cholesterol, in populations ranging from overweight adults with mildly elevated cholesterol to patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies indicate that these effects are supported by proposed mechanisms including inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, the same enzyme targeted by statin medications, and that artichoke is most commonly studied in combination with other plant-based compounds such as bergamot, which makes it difficult to isolate its independent contribution in some trials. Reviews of the broader nutraceutical literature, including commentary on recent European cardiovascular guidelines, position artichoke extract as a reasonable adjunct to lifestyle modification for people at low cardiovascular risk with mildly to moderately elevated lipids, rather than a replacement for proven medications in higher-risk individuals. Limitations across the evidence base include small sample sizes, short study durations, frequent use of multi-ingredient formulas, and a relative absence of large independent trials examining artichoke extract alone, meaning the overall findings, while consistently directionally positive, should be interpreted with appropriate caution.
