Artichoke Extract for Blood Sugar Regulation

Preliminary evidence 4 studies

Research suggests that artichoke extract and related compounds from Jerusalem artichoke may support blood sugar regulation through several mechanisms, including inhibition of α-glucosidase, an enzyme involved in carbohydrate digestion, as well as improvements in insulin levels and blood lipid profiles. The available evidence spans in vitro experiments, animal models, and one small randomized controlled trial in humans, with all studies pointing in a supportive direction. The human trial, which tested artichoke extract in combination with white kidney bean extract rather than artichoke alone, found reductions in fasting blood glucose and insulin resistance in overweight adults, though its small sample size of 39 participants limits how broadly its findings can be applied. Several studies also highlight the potential role of inulin, a fiber naturally present in Jerusalem artichoke, as a contributing factor in these effects, and one study found that fermenting the extract may further enhance its properties, though much of this work remains at the preclinical stage and larger, well-controlled human trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
