Andrographis (Expanded) for Cold And Flu Support

Moderate evidence 8 studies

Research suggests that Andrographis paniculata has meaningful support from the published literature for cold and flu symptom relief, with two systematic reviews and meta-analyses from 2004 finding it superior to placebo in alleviating symptoms of uncomplicated upper respiratory tract infections, and multiple subsequent reviews reinforcing these findings through proposed mechanisms including immunomodulation and antiviral activity. Studies indicate the evidence base includes randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and narrative reviews spanning roughly two decades, with the overall direction of findings being consistently supportive. One notable exception comes from a 2006 review focused specifically on children, which found Andrographis reduced nasal secretions but did not demonstrate a significant effect on overall URTI symptom duration in that population, suggesting the evidence may be stronger for some outcomes or age groups than others. Readers should be aware that many of the supporting reviews draw on an overlapping pool of underlying trials, and that the quality and size of the primary trial literature remains a recognized limitation in this area.
